It is a natural reaction to have fear when starting up a business. All four, or any combination, of the following core fears can be present:

  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
  • Fear of rejection

Understanding Fear

Fear is normally present when looking towards the future or at past experiences. Living in the present counteracts fear. Staying in the moment and working on what is at hand, there is nothing to fear. Having faith, in abilities and to be successful, will keep fear at bay.

Discussing fears has shown to reduce the impact it has. Staying inside it feeds on the darkness. When brought out into the light and examined it tends to lose it's hold. Talk about fears with others, don't allow it to grow out of control. Fear is common and natural for entrepreneurs due to the risks involved in being in business.

Changing Attitudes

Limiting beliefs can play a role in fear generated behaviour. Believing failure is eminent manifests itself in reality. Shifting that belief to one of eminent success produces that reality. Scientific studies have proven the power of the mind to overcome physical challenges using placebos. Recent studies have shown a correlation between attitude and success. Positive thinking, attitude and self-talk are important tools to shifting limiting beliefs to empowering ones.

"Personal and professional success may lead to happiness but may also engender success. Happy individuals are predisposed to seek out and undertake new goals in life and this reinforces positive emotions, say researchers who examined the connections between desirable characteristics, life successes and well-being of over 275,000 people." - American Psychological Association - Public Affairs Office

Shifting attitudes towards failure can support success. Failure is not life-threatening. Rejection does not necessarily mean it's personal. Personal rejection simply indicates a lack of personality fit, which translates to the potential client not being ideal. Ask, "What would the worst case scenario be?" Decide if the outcome is tolerable.

Taming the Dragons

Focus energy on successes and accomplishments. Stay away from dwelling on mistakes or negative outcomes. Learn from them and move on. Discuss with a colleague, mentor or coach if necessary. Use tools such as white boards or vision statements as a focal point for working towards milestones or ultimate goals. Make a commitment to writing out accomplishments at least yearly.

"Absence of fear and negativity translates to
confidence and attraction." - Mary-Lou Ashton
